WHAT ARE BOTOX AND JEUVEAU?

Botox and Jeuveau are injectable treatments that belong to a class of medications called neuromodulators (you may also hear people call them neurotoxins). They work to temporarily relax the muscles of the face that can cause us to have fine lines and wrinkles.

Botox and Jeuveau both contain the active ingredient botulinum toxin type A. Botox is manufactured by Allergan and uses onabotulinum toxin A. Jeuveau is manufactured by Evolus and uses prabotulinum toxin A. When used in medical and cosmetic treatments, the toxin is in a purified form that is safe to inject.

When injected, the neurotoxins interrupt the signals between nerves and muscles, allowing muscles to relax and minimize dynamic wrinkles and the skin that covers them to smoothen. The result is an overall softer and more youthful appearance.

Commonly injected areas are the forehead, crow’s feet, and glabella (the area between the eyebrows, what people commonly call “the 11s”) and more.

It is important to note that Jeuveau and Botox are not interchangeable products; they have slightly different formulations and dosing requirements. During your consultation, you will discuss with your provider the different options and decide which is best for you.

WHAT TO EXPECT?

Botox and Jeuveau treatments are fast and minimally invasive. You will have your initial consult to determine the areas you would like to address and how many units are recommended. The area is then cleaned with alcohol and an ultra-fine needle is used to inject Botox or Jeuveau into the targeted areas.

Discomfort following the treatment is usually minimal and brief and you can continue on with your day after your treatment. Patients may experience some temporary redness or swelling, bruising or tenderness around the injection sites, or headaches, but this typically subsides within a few hours to days.

While no downtime is required for treatment recovery, we do recommend avoiding strenuous activities for 24 hours after treatment. We also advise that you not lie down for 4-6 hours after treatment.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?

You can begin to expect relaxation of the area treated after about 5-10 days with full results expected at 14 days.

HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS LAST?

Results typically last for between 3-4 months. Over time, the body metabolizes the product and you begin to get gradual return of muscle movement in the area you treated.

You can do treatments every 3 months and with regular treatments you can expect to continue to see softening of your wrinkles and some that will completely disappear.

ARE NEUROMODULATORS SAFE?

Yes, Botox and Jeuveau have been approved by the FDA for cosmetic use. However, patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have certain neurological conditions should not receive neurotoxin treatments.
